Substance Use And Abuse - Lawyers at Risk — 1 Virginia Well-Being Credit

In this one-hour March 14, 2024 program Bruce L. Adelson, Esquire explains why lawyers are at significantly higher risk than other professionals for substance use and abuse. The nature of the legal profession, coupled with personality traits common to many attorneys, create a high-risk scenario. While there are unique barriers in the legal profession to seeking help, an increasing number of programs have been designed to specifically treat attorneys.

Mr. Adelson is CEO of Federal Compliance Consulting LLC, Potomac, Maryland, and serves as an Adjunct Faculty Member at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and the Georgetown School of Medicine. A former senior attorney of the United States Department of Justice, he is the ADA Consultant to the Idaho Supreme Court and to the New Mexico Administrative Office of the Courts.

Major topics include:
Why lawyers are a high-risk group
- assistance and support groups
Statistics: How serious is substance abuse in the legal profession?
Effects of addictive behavior
Guide to self-assess the severity of substance use
Treatments specific to lawyers
